Our
wines are labeled "Vercingetorix" or "VX" for short. Vercingetorix's
father brought his Celtic clan into Burgundy, the home of Pinot Noir,
around 100 B.C. Vercingetoriex and became chieftain under the threat of
Roman invasion. He united the clan against Caesar and the superior
force of his legions. He adopted a scorched earth policy sparing only
the vineyards and his clan's most important settlement, Averticum.
After a long and bloody siege, the town and its inhabitants were
destroyed.
Vercingetorix,
in accordance with tradition, gave himself up to Caesar, was paraded in
triumph in Rome, and put to death. In Burgundy, and much of rural
France, he remains a hero of his people to this day.
