Fall 2007 Newsletter

From Willamette Farms/ Vx Pinot Wines

The cool and late summer of 2007 resulted in our harvests being at least 2 weeks later than usual. Then came a very rainy October. But, in one four-day window of dryer weather, we were able to rush out and gather in all of our grapes* We then had to watch the hazelnut crop get rained on day after day. Finally we are taking advantage of the sunny break this week to work almost round the clock to harvest, a work in progress as this is being written.

Red Wine Compound Procects the Prostate
Red Wine Compound Protects the Prostate , Study Finds

A new study published online in the Journal of Carcinogenesis reported that laboratory mice fed the chemical resveratrol, a compound found naturally in red wine, developed tumors in the prostrate at a much lower rate than mice fed a normal diet. More importantly, the scientists believe that the research hold good promise for humans since the mice ingested a form of the chemical. The researchers, from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, also found the resveratrol did not harm other systems in the mice.

The scientists used 82 mice in their experiment. About one-third were fed 625 mg of resveratrol per kilogram of body weight, per day in addition to their regular diet. According to the study’s lead author, Coral Lamartiniere, a researcher at the UAB department of pharmacology & toxicology, this amount is equal to drinking about one bottle of red wine per day. After seven months, 23 percent of the control mice showed some form of prostate cancer, while only 3 percent of the resveratrol-fed mice did.

Lamartiniere said, however, that men should not drink a bottle of wine a day, as that level of consumption may be hazardous. However, Lamartiniere has already taken the study results to heart. “I drink a glass of Pinot Noir every night and take resveratrol supplements ever day” he said.

Notes from 2007

2007 Vintage

The 2007 growing season was cool & wet The Fall wet conditions & cool weather provided difficult choices for the harvesting of our Pinot Noir grapes. The Brix numbers were several degrees below our 2006 harvest. Fortunately, we did get some dry days which allowed us to get in our crop before ther return of wet conditions. The conditions presented this year were representative of vintages of the late 1990's which produced outstanding wines of great finesse and balance.
